Without feathers the bird cannot fly.”

Te Pae Kōkako – The Aotearoa New Zealand Opera Studio (TANZOS), based at the University of Waikato, is the perch ('pae') where Aotearoa’s opera voices gather strength before taking flight.
Established in 2023 at the invitation of Dame Malvina Major, the programme supports a small cohort of singers each year through intensive, immersive training, international connections, and fully funded scholarships. Here, artists bridge the space between the training they have had and the level the world demands.
Already, TANZOS singers are stepping onto the global stage — carrying their voices from Aotearoa to the world.
